Agents of Democracy in the Arab Region:
The Cases of Lebanon, Syria and Iraq

Raghid El-Sohl is Dr. Phil. in Politics and International Relations from St. Antony’s College in Oxford. He has served as a political adviser for the UN regional agency The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Lebanon, and is co-founder and co-director of The Project for Democracy Studies in the Arab Countries.

A native Lebanese, Dr. El-Sohl began his career as a pro-democracy politician in Lebanon before the civil war, when he was forced into exile. From his exile in England, Dr. El-Sohl became a distinguished academic and political figure in the debate about democracy and human rights in the Arab world.

Throughout his career Dr. El-Sohl has published several articles and books on Arab and International Affairs. In 2003 Dr. El-Sohl published his latest book Lebanon and Arabism, 1936-45, which deals with the issue of national reconstruction in Lebanon.

The seminar will be held in English.
