The Political and Economic Role of Asia in Sudan

DIIS coorganizes international conference in New Delhi

On 10 November in New Delhi, DIIS and the African Studies Association (ASA) of India held an international conference exploring the political and economic role of Asia in Sudan. The event was organized to more closely engage Asian academics and research institutes on the peace process in Sudan.

The former Foreign Secretary of India & Chairman of the ASA, Mr. Shashank along with Sudan’s Ambassador to India, H. E. Khidir Haroun Ahmed opened the conference. Indian, Chinese and European scholars gave presentations revolving around India’s historical and cultural relations with Sudan, China’s diplomatic challenge in the Darfur crisis, and Asia’s demand for oil resources in Sudan.

Following the conference an evening seminar focused on the wider engagement of Asia on the African continent at the India International Centre. Dr. Wang Suolao (Beijing University) Dr. Ajay Dubey (Jawaharlal Nehru University) and Dr. Roland Marchal (CERI, Sciences Po – Paris) spoke before a public audience on China, India and Japan respectively.
