The Legacy of 1989

A DIIS conference celebrated the fall of the Berlin Wall and analyzed its implications

On 9 November, in connection with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, DIIS arranged a major international conference in cooperation with the University of Copenhagen.

Speaking before an audience of some 350 gathered at the University’s Ceremonial Hall, Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Per Stig Møller delivered the opening speech, followed by Prof. Timothy Garton Ash of Oxford University for the keynote address. Former Danish Foreign Minister Uffe Ellemann-Jensen provided the concluding remarks.

Renowned academics and practitioners such as senior researcher Michael Emerson from the Centre for European Policy Studies in Bruxelles, Amb. Alyson K Bailes of the University of Iceland, and Borys Tarasyuk, member of Parliament of Ukraine addressed the political, economic and social implications of 1989 in Europe and beyond.

A short video from the first session of the conference has been made available by Ministry of Foreign Affairs here.

The powerpoint presentations of some of the speakers will appear here shortly.

In the coming months, DIIS will also publish a report containing the written version of the presentations delivered at the conference.
