Understanding China's Economic Diplomacy


DIIS seminar challenged the myth of China being a unitary actor


China’s growing role in the world economy is indisputable. As a consequence, power relations in the global economy are changing fundamentally.
 
The big question in the minds of policy-makers all over the world is: how will China use its strength internationally? What’s on China’s agenda with respect to ongoing multilateral attempts to revise key aspects of global economic governance?
 
Dr. Yang Jiang (Copenhagen Business School) and Dr. Yuka Kobayashi (University of London) spoke at DIIS yesterday, at a seminar on China’s economic diplomacy, to shed light on these crucial questions and provide a nuanced view of Chinese foreign policy. Jiang challenged the myth that China is acting as a strategic unitary actor when conducting economic diplomacy. She asked the following questions: To what extent is China’s policymaking towards economic diplomacy monolithic or fragmented and what factors constrain the Chinese state’s room for conducting economic diplomacy?
