The Politics of Piety

Robin May Schott writes on religious and feminist discourses

Two important nerves in contemporary debates about religion are 1) the tension between secular liberal and religious discourses; and 2) the tension between feminist and religious discourses. In her new article, “The Politics of Piety and the Norms of Analysis,” Robin May Schott focuses on this second theme. She discusses Saba Mahmood’s book, Politics of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject (Princeton 2005) and argues for the role of normative values such as respect for women’s safety, dignity, and access to education in a widened account of women’s ethical agency in the piety movement.
