The Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) and the University of Copenhagen have the pleasure of inviting you to a conference on:

The Legacy of 1989 – Democracy, the Market and Europe
Monday, 9 November 2009, 09.00-16.00

University of Copenhagen
Ceremonial Hall (Festsalen), Frue Plads, Copenhagen K

Background

On 9 November, Europe will remember the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The anniversary calls for celebration but also for reflection about the legacy of that event and of the systemic changes it has brought to Europe ever since. This international conference seeks to address the political, social, and economic implications of 1989 in Europe. The conference will bring together key academics and public intellectuals that have studied and written extensively on post-Cold War Europe, as well as practitioners and activists who have witnessed or contributed in different capacities to those momentous events. This diverse participation will enable discussion of the existing paradigms of democratization and their record in Central and Eastern Europe; the transition of former Communist states towards a market-based liberal democracy and the impact of events such as the 2009 financial crisis on it; the role of the EU and of European integration in attaining both goals.

The conference is organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, the European Affairs Committee of the Danish Parliament and the U. S. Embassy in Copenhagen.
