The Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) hereby has the pleasure of inviting you to the DIIS conference on
Nuclear Terrorism – Assessment and Prevention
16 December 2004, 09.00-17.00
Danish Institute for International Studies Main Auditorium, Pakhuset, ground floor Strandgade 71, 1401 Copenhagen K
Background
In preparation for the Danish membership of the UN Security Council in 2005, the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) is organising a conference to assess the potential threat of nuclear terrorism and discuss how to enhance non-proliferation initiatives in a global setting. Since Denmark aspires to chair the UN Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC), the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated a wide range of studies concerning weak states and terrorism, hereby focusing on preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction to terrorists. A substantial range of these studies are carried out by DIIS, and as a supplement to these studies, the conference gathers a number of distinguished international experts to discuss how imminent the threat from nuclear terrorism is and how to prevent it from happening.
The discussion will evolve around the following questions: - Is nuclear terrorism a real threat? - What is the security level at Russian nuclear sites? - What is the assessed threat from weak states and strong networks? - How can we strengthen the global partnership on non-proliferation?
