The Danish Institute for International Studies, DIIS, has the pleasure of inviting you to a seminar with Göran Rosenberg, Swedish journalist and writer, who will be speaking on
Israel, Europe and the New Anti-Semitism
Friday, 10 December 2004, 14.00-16.00 Danish Institute for International Studies Main Auditorium, Pakhuset, Ground Floor Strandgade 71, 1401 Copenhagen K
Since April 2000, Europe has experienced an increased number of anti-Semitic incidents. Two recently released European reports have provoked an upheaded debate about whether Europe is experiencing a new kind of anti-Semitism. In January, an installation at the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm was accused of being anti-Semitic, leading to a diplomatic crisis between Sweden and Israel. In April, OSCE hosted an international conference in Berlin on anti-Semitism, considering it a security risk. How should Europe react to this? What are the relations between Israel and the 'new' anti-Semitism? And what consequences does the debate about anti-Semitism have for the multicultural societies within Europe?
Göran Rosenberg is the former founder and editor of the Swedish magazine, Moderna Tider, and an internationally well-known writer and journalist. For many years he has followed American, Israeli and European politics, and several of his books and articles include writings on anti-Semitism. Mr. Rosenberg works as an independent columnist at the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter and tv-producer at the Swedish TV4 hosting a programme of round table discussions and interviews. He is best known in Denmark for his book Det förlorade landet: en personlig historia (a personal history of Zionism, Messianism and the state of Israel), translated into several languages. His latest book, Plikten, profiten och konsten att vara människa (Duty, Profit and the Art of Being Human), will be out in Danish in 2005.
The seminar will be held in English.
The seminar will be held by the Department for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, DIIS, in cooperation with the Department for History and Social Theory, Roskilde University.
