Academic conference on the role of identity in Sudan

'Local, Regional and National Dimensions of Identity in Sudan’

The conference brought two Sudanese scholars from the University of Khartoum to discuss the role of identity in conflict and peace in Sudan. First, Dr. Manzoul Assal explored the question of identity as one generally discussed on a macro level in Sudan. He warned of the ills produced from Arabism and Africanism in reinforcing conflict, and underlined the need for an exploration of identity at a micro level in order to tackle Sudan’s multiple political crises. Second, Dr. Mom Kou Nhial Arou examined the commonalities and differences within the diverse identities of southern Sudan, presenting the violent repercussions of losing the idea of establishing a common identity in Sudan.

The conference also provided a platform for political parties and civil society organizations in Sudan to express their ideas on identity. The National Congress Party, the Sudan’s People’s Liberation Movement, United South Sudanese Community Organisation, and Nuba Mountain Solidarity Abroad, were just several of the groups that made presentations and participated in lively debates throughout the day.

Overall, the event contributed to the efforts of the Paths to Peace in Sudan project at DIIS, which supports collaborations with Sudanese researchers and students on critical issues revolving around the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. The international conference, ‘Local, Regional and National Dimensions of Identity in Sudan’, took place at the University of Oxford, St. Antony’s College on February 14th 2009. It was the result of a partnership with DIIS and the Sudan Programme at the Middle East Centre, University of Oxford.
