From where will Europe get the hydrocarbons?Svend Aage Christensen interviewed in "Europa lige nu"On 29 September, 2008, DR P1 (The Danish Broadcasting Corporation) carried an interview in Danish with senior researcher Svend Aage Christensen, DIIS, in the programme “Europa lige nu”. Christensen presented some of the findings of a recent DIIS Conference on energy questions. He said that the popular expectations of massive supplies of hydrocarbons for Europe from Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Arctic Ocean were probably overstated – or that at least there would be a considerable lead time. He mentioned the prognosis of the EU Commission, according to which by 2020 nearly equal amounts of natural gas will reach Europe from Russia and North Africa – 200 billion cubic meters per year from each of these two producers. He also gave concrete examples of shoddy information in some Western media about Russian behaviour and aspirations in the Arctic and explained how that was detrimental to trust and cooperation so badly needed between the circumpolar states in the future.
