Freedom of the Press in Russia? Is the glass empty? Some recent examplesPresentation in pictures. Spoken commentsThe question of press freedom is of vital importance for the development of Russia and Russian society. A new DIIS PowerPoint presentation sends a probe into the Russian media landscape before and after the presidential election 2 March 2008. It provides concrete examples of what would usually be considered “embarrassing” or “controversial” news. The examples are in Russian and English and with spoken comments in Danish. A version with comments in English is being prepared. The idea behind the slide show is, by way of concrete examples, to provide a supplement to the many general statements we are being presented with in Western media and by watchdog organizations. By regularly monitoring this kind of news in the Russian media we will be better prepared to assess improvement and decline of freedoms in the Russian press. The author of the presentation is senior researcher Svend Aage Christensen, DIIS. |
