Reintegrating ex-combatants: Post-Conflict Livelihood, Mobility and Community in Liberia

Jairo Munive Rincon

The aim of this project is to explore the political and economic dimensions of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (from now on DDR) program for ex-combatants in post-conflict Liberia. A major assumption of the project is that due to the national focus of the post-conflict and DDR activities, interventions generally neglect the local dynamics of violence and resource mobilization generated by prolonged armed conflict, and, by the same token, tend to ignore the cross-border dimensions of West African wars. Against this background the project aims to answer the following questions:

  • What are the nature and dynamics of the social networks, mobility patterns and livelihood strategies in which Liberian ex-combatants are engaging?
  • How does the reintegration of ex-combatants influence power relations and hierarchies in communities of resettlement and, hence, prospects for lasting peace, stability and social, political and economic development?

To explore these overall questions, the research project will address ex-combatants and their engagement in social, economic and political dynamics in the capital Monrovia and the border town of Ganta and neighbouring rural localities in Nimba County. The latter is an important commercial centre, situated close to the frontier with Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire. The project compares the reintegration of ex-combatants in a rural and an urban context and analyse the differences and similarities in terms of mobility, livelihood, political identity and community interaction.
