Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) hereby has the pleasure of inviting you to the DIIS conference:
Strengthening African Capacities for Conflict Prevention and Management
16 August 2004, 08.30-16.30 Danish Institute for International Studies Main Auditorium, Pakhuset Strandgade 71, 1401 Copenhagen K
In preparation for the expected Danish membership of the UN Security Council in 2005 the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) is organising a conference to discuss how to strengthen the African conflict prevention and management capacity. The discussion will focus on the four major African regional organisations which are expected to be at the centre of the Security Council’s work to handle African conflicts, namely AU, ECOWAS, SADC and IGAD.
The discussion will evolve around the following questions: - What challenges do the African regional organisations face in implementing conflict prevention and management on the African continent? - What can the international community do to strengthen the African organisations’ security capacity? - Where does Denmark have a comparative advantage in strengthening the organisations’ security capacity?
The conference will start with a short presentation of the Danish initiatives to strengthen the African regional capacity for conflict prevention and management. This includes an introduction to the Danish Foreign Ministry’s Africa Programme for Peace and the DIIS project on strengthening the security capacity of the African regional organisations. This initial introduction will create the basis for a broader discussion and evaluation of the Danish and international initiatives to strengthen the African regional capacity for conflict prevention and management.
