Ukraine – Political Chaos or the Perils of Democracy? Monday, 3 September 2007, 09.30-13.30
Danish Institute for International Studies Main Auditorium Strandgade 71, ground floor, 1401 Copenhagen K
The seminar is now fully booked
Background
Parliamentary elections will be held in Ukraine on 30 September 2007 – some four years ahead of schedule. The decision to hold an early parliamentary election was agreed upon by President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych in early June 2007 after a two-month stand-off between the two. This stand-off is not only a struggle for power, but can be categorised as a profound political and constitutional crisis with far-reaching consequences for the future of the country. The question is how this current political crisis in Ukraine – and its potential impact both nationally and internationally after the parliamentary election on 30 September 2007 – will pan out. In order to come closer to an understanding of not only what the outcome of the current crisis will be after 30 September 2007, but also what the reasons for it actually are, DIIS has the pleasure of inviting Dr. Andrew Wilson, MP Hanne Severinsen, journalist Johannes Wamberg Andersen, and Dr. Mykhaylo Kirsenko to present their views on the subject. Andrew Wilson is senior lecturer in Ukrainian Studies at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies. His publications include the monographs The Ukrainians: Unexpected Nation (Yale University Press, 2000) and Ukrainian Nationalism in the 1990s: A Minority Faith (Cambridge University Press, 1996). He has also published in East European Constitutional Review, The World Today, Nations and Nationalism, and Slavonic and East European Review. Hanne Severinsen is a member of the Danish parliament and the Council of Europe. As part of the Council of Europe’s Monitor Committee, she has monitored Ukraine since 1995. Johannes Wamberg Andersen is a journalist with an extensive knowledge of Eastern Europe in general and Ukraine specifically. He has done work for the Danish newspapers Information and Weekendavisen, and he covered the March 2006 parliamentary elections in Ukraine for Danish Radio P1. Mykhaylo Kirsenko is professor at the Department of European and Euro-Atlantic Policy at the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine, which is affiliated with the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has co-authored the books History of East-Central Europe (2002) and Balkan Studies in Soviet Ukraine (1983) and has had more than 160 articles and book chapters published in Ukraine, France, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, Poland, Russia, and Switzerland.
