The Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) is pleased to invite you to a book launch and seminar with Prof. Eberhard Kienle on:

The Fallacy of Political Engineering in the Middle East and Beyond
Friday, 22 September 2006, 15.00-17.30

Danish Institute for International Studies
Main Auditorium
Strandgade 71, ground floor, 1401 Copenhagen K

Background

In the spring of 2005, a workshop took place at DIIS, seeking answers to the question of how to combine development and democracy in a Middle Eastern context. The workshop was sponsored by the Danish Social Science Council and brought together a group of researchers, graduate students, journalists, as well as representatives from ministries, NGOs, and other Danish organizations that are involved in the development sector and/or Middle Eastern affairs.
The now published book Democratization and Development: New Political Strategies for the Middle East, ed. by Dietrich Jung (New York: Palgrave/MacMillan), is an indirect outcome of this workshop, comprising eight essays from six international scholars who gave papers at the workshop and, together with the editor, developed these studies further into an edited book.

Prof. Kienle takes his point of departure in some findings of this book and critically investigates the “fallacies” of current foreign policies aiming at political and economic reforms in the Middle East.

Eberhard Kienle is Directeur de Recherche at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Director of the Institut de Recherches et d’Etudes sur le Monde Arabe et Musulman (IREMAM) at Aix-en-Provence, France. Previously, Prof. Kienle taught Middle Eastern Politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London and at St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford. He is the author of several works on Arab politics, notably his three books on Syria and Egypt, A Grand Delusion: Democracy and Economic Reform in Egypt (I.B. Tauris, 2000), Contemporary Syria: Liberalization Between Cold War and Cold Peace (1994), and Ba’th v. Ba’th: The Conflict Between Syria and Iraq, 1986-1989 (I.B. Tauris, 1990).
