Background

Payment for Environmental Services is gaining popularity as an approach to protect important ecosystems and the services they provide as well as a mechanism by which to mobilise additional funding for conservation. Many development agencies, including Danida, are currently exploring how they may support efforts to establish payment schemes in their partner countries and under which conditions payment for environmental service schemes may not only constitute an effective approach to conservation but also contribute to reduce poverty.

Danida has asked DIIS to undertake a study to review documented experiences of payment for environmental services in order to develop recommendations for how and in which contexts development assistance may contribute to facilitate payment for environmental services. The workshop Pro-poor Payments for Environmental Services – Implications for Donor Assistance forms part of this study.
