The Department contributes to critical and practical understanding of the complex social, political, economic and environmental processes shaping contemporary changes in developing countries and societies.

Research is currently organised within four research fields:

State Capacity, Local Politics and Service Provision

follows major developments in public sector reforms; analyses interventions to improve resource mobilisation, service provision and poverty alleviation; and analyses reforms to increase accountability, effectiveness and participation.

Aid Policy and its Impact

follows developments of particular importance for the policies of countries in the North towards the South; analyses and assesses international aid policy; and develops analytical frameworks for and undertakes studies and evaluations of Danish and other development interventions.

Conflict, Development and the State

follows the international debate on state-building, war and conflict in developing countries; analyses the political economy of conflict with a focus on the linkages between poverty and conflict; and analyses and assesses reform processes directed towards democratisation with a particular focus on the judiciary, armed forces, police and security services.
