Background
Terrorism in Europe continues to attract headlines, yet very few books have been published on the phenomenon of Jihad in Europe. The field of Jihad in Europe is indeed in a developing phase and much research remains to be carried out to understand the origins, current situation and future trends of this important aspect of European security.
As Lorenzo Vidino has shown in his book Jihad in Europe: The New Battleground of the International Jihad (Prometheus Books, 2005), the threat has evolved substantially over the past decade. New terrorist groups have emerged, terrorist profiles are changing, and the culture of Martyrdom has gained substantial influence among aspiring Jihadists.
Based on a meticulous collection of cases studies, Lorenzo Vidino’s subsequent analysis highlights a number of factors which have assisted in the rise of militant Islamism in Europe.
Among the topics to be covered in Vidino’s presentation are: asylum policies, international terrorist networks, legislative constraints, the identity crisis in Muslim communities and the state of current counter terrorism policies across Europe.

The presentation will be followed by 30 minutes of Q&A.
