IBESoResearch on Biodiversity, Ecology and Society Protected areas constitute an important element in national strategies to meet commitments of promoting the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Concerns are, however, growing that many of the World's protected areas are currently being degraded. At the same time, it is increasingly being recognized that effective protection depends upon the support and active participation from a significant part of the local actors. Danida is supporting the Government of Nicaragua in its efforts to strengthen the management of protected areas in ways which encourage local participation and contribute to reduce poverty.
