The journal Politik publishes special issue on 'the Arab Revolts'Co-edited by DIIS employee, Maja Greenwood The latest special issue of Politik on ’the Arab revolts,’ co-edited by Morten Valbjørn and DIIS employee Maja Greenwood, pulls together contributions that reflect the current debate in the wider circles of the social sciences, in the wake of the Arab revolts of 2011-2012. This debate has sought ways to understand and explain the nature, background and implications of the revolts, and whether they give cause for critical self-reflection within Middle East research and social sciences more broadly, as these developments took everyone by surprise. Maja Greenwood also contributes with the article ’Copenhagen-Cairo on a roundtrip: A security theory meets the revolution’, co-written with Professor Ole Wæver. The article addresses the criticism Securitization Theory has received for its limited applicability to the non-western world, through 1) reflections on the use of non-traditional and traditional security concepts, 2) an analysis of how the Egyptian revolution can be understood through Securitization Theory, as well as 3) a discussion of what engaging with the ‘Arab Spring’ will mean for further theory development. |
