The Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) has the pleasure of inviting you to a seminar on:
Sanctioning Iran – Domestic and International Consequences Friday, 27 April 2012, 13.00-16.00
Danish Institute for International Studies Main Auditorium Strandgade 71, ground floor, 1401 Copenhagen K
Background Due to its nuclear program Iran is currently subjected to the harshest international sanctions, amounting to economic warfare. Whereas Iran maintains its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, the international community fears it is building a nuclear bomb. Domestically the Iranian regime faces huge social and economic problems and a widespread legitimacy crisis after the disputed 2009 presidential election, which sparked the biggest demonstrations in 30 years. The precarious situation and geostrategic importance of Iran raise numerous questions, which this seminar will address. How are Iran’s economy and domestic politics affected by the sanctions? Will the Iranian leaders bend to the imposed pressure and cease the nuclear program, or try to circumvent the sanctions by seeking other partners in Asia?
