Educational activities DIIS, Holocaust and Genocide, initiates and organizes a wide range of educational activities that aims at raising awareness, generating knowledge and encouraging debate on genocide and related issues. The unit arranges educational seminars, produces educational material and conducts teacher training seminars. The primary educational activity undertaken by the unit occurs in connection with the annual day of Holocaust and Genocide Remembrance in Denmark – Auschwitz Day, 27th of January. In the weeks leading up to this day, DIIS, Holocaust and Genocide, conducts a series of seminars for high school students and teachers across the country. At the seminars the dynamics of genocide and the challenges linked to preventing genocide are discussed. At the core of the seminar is a range of workshop sessions in which the students debate questions, problems and dilemmas related to different aspects of genocide. The workshop facilitators have all completed a training program on genocide education undertaken by the unit. In addition to this, the unit organizes a program for teachers at Yad Vashem in Israel, as well as other seminars for students and educators. The unit’s educational activities also include the production of educational materials and the operation of three educational websites: www.folkedrab.dk, www.holocaust.dk and www.theresienstadt.dk. In the spring of 2010 the unit launched a documentary film for educational purposes: “THERESIENSTADT – Danish Children in Nazi Captivity”. The film tells the story of six Jewish children who were deported with their families from Denmark to the concentration camp Theresienstadt during World War 2. The film (produced with English subtitles) is accompanied by the educational website www.theresienstadt.dk where the film can be seen.
