The Danish Institute for International Studies, DIIS, has the pleasure of inviting you to a seminar with Ihor Ostash, Vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Ukrainian Parliament, who will be speaking on The Consequences of the Orange Revolution for Ukraine and the RegionMonday, 18 April 2005, 16.00-17.30Danish Institute for International Studies Main Auditorium, Pakhuset, Ground Floor Strandgade 71, 1401 Copenhagen K The Orange Revolution has been interpreted by some Western observers as the first ripple in an overall wave of democratisation in the region. However, whether or not this perspective is no more than a bout of wishful thinking can only be determined with any credibility by actors on the ground. Ihor Ostash is a senior figure in the opposition that brought about the demise of former Prime Minister Yanukovich, as well as the current Vice-chairman of the influential Foreign Affairs Committee of the Ukrainian Parliament. Throughout his political career, he has been active in the OSCE, being the head of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly since 1994, as well as a participant in several OSCE working groups and seminars. Before being elected to parliament in 1994, he was director of the International School of Ukrainian Studies, National Academy of Ukraine, and he holds multiple academic degrees with an MA in Law from Kyiv Shevchenko University, a PhD in Slavic Studies from the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences, and a MA in Slavic Studies from Lviv Franko University. From 1993 to 1994, he held an IREX Fellowship at Harvard University. He is the author of Ukraine in 1990's (Melbourne, 1992), Quo Vadis, Ukraine (author and editor, 1992) as well a prolific writer of articles for periodicals. The seminar will be held in English.
