Analyzing Authoritarian Regime Legitimation: Lessons from MoroccoJulie Pruzan-Jørgensen proposes new research strategy in Middle East CritiqueRecent years have seen the proliferation of a rich post-democratization literature focusing on the surprising resilience of authoritarian rule in the Arab Middle East despite years of both internal and external demands for political reform. Yet, so far, the literature has not paid sufficient attention to the difficult challenge for authoritarian incumbents of legitimizing their rule. In a new article, DIIS Researcher Julie Pruzan-Jørgensen proposes a new empirically-based bottom-up research strategy on authoritarian regime legitimation and applies this to a specific Moroccan case study. The article is part of a special issue of Middle East Critique which focuses on post-democratization approaches to the study of Middle East Politics. It includes contributions from among others Raymond Hinnebusch, Oliver Schlumberger, Francesco Cavatorta and Morten Valbjørn. |
