UN high-level debate on peace and security

DIIS organizes event in Liberia in preparation for the General Assembly debate

The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft, will organize a high-level thematic debate of the UN General Assembly focused on peace and security 10-11 May 2016. The debate seeks to reflect on the most recent UN peace and security reviews, including i.a. the review of UN peace operations, the Peacebuilding Architecture Review and the implementation review of Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security.

The debate will take place as the world is considering how best to implement the ambitious and wide-ranging 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and who – as the next Secretary-General – will lead the UN and other actors in this task.

The office of the PGA has welcomed an initiative taken by a global network of think tanks to organize a number of regional seminars in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East that can prepare, inform and feed into the discussions at the HLTD.

In this context, DIIS has in collaboration with the Government of Liberia, the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Norwegian Institute for Foreign Affairs, the Dag Hammersköld Foundation, the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) organized a preparatory event in Monrovia, Liberia on 31 March. It will be attended by several ministers, senior UN personnel and ambassadors.
