As thousands of migrants drown on the Mediterranean Sea, Europe has lost its moral compass and sense of direction, argues DIIS senior researchers Fabrizio Tassinari and Hans Lucht in a recent commentary in Foreign Affairs.
They explore the fact that after the Second World War, Europe has protected its safety and prosperity by opening up borders, not by erecting fences. Migrants dying in the waves at Europe’s southern shores thus challenge the foundational fabric of the continent.
