CCRI - Climate Change and Rural Institutions

"Climate Change and Rural Institutions" was a four-year multi-partner research programme, coordinated by DIIS in collaboration with partners in Nepal, Vietnam, Uganda and Zambia. The programme was headed by Ian Christoplos.

The programme examined how local governments, agricultural advisory services, natural resource management agencies and farmer organisations are responding to climate change in Africa and Asia.

Most research efforts on climate change adaptation have focused on the global, national or community levels. The role of meso institutions - located at eg the district and province level – has attracted more limited interest from researchers. However, increasing evidence suggests that their role is crucial for improving policy implementation, as they occupy a strategic position between the ministries at the centre and the different actors in the local context.

The CCRI research programme addressed this knowledge gap and aimed to improve our understanding of the performance and potential of meso or intermediate level institutions to support adaptation processes.

The programme was funded by Danida. Additional support was provided by the Research Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS).
